Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative Ties That Bind Competition
When we join forces, we can accomplish great things!
Together we can help find a cure for Alzheimer’s…these are the “Ties That Bind”!
A new twist has been added to the 2010 Exhibit…the AAQI Ties That Bind Competition! Our goal is to showcase one of the guild’s many outreach projects and bring Alzheimer’s awareness to our community while at the same time making another group donation to Ami Simm’s Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.
Ties That Bind quilts need not be about Alzheimer’s or even ties, but the quilt must be no larger than 9”x12” and contain material from a necktie either provided by MLQG or stolen from your husband’s closet. (This would be a great way to get rid of that ugly tie that has been hanging in the closet since the 80’s!)
AAQI Ties That Bind quilts will be on display at the Gmeiner during the 2010 Exhibit and will have a separate viewer’s choice ballot. The maker of the quilt with the most votes will win a quilter’s gift basket. At the close of the exhibit all of the Ties That Bind quilts will be donated to AAQI to help raise money for Alzheimer’s research which makes everyone who enters a quilt in the AAQI Ties That Bind Competition a winner!
Rules
Ties That Bind Competition quilts need not be about Alzheimer's or even ties, but the quilt must contain material from a necktie (provided by the MLQG or stolen from your husband’s closet). Any theme, style, color, technique, and ability are welcome.
Finished quilts must be no larger than 9" x 12". No exceptions.
Please use “Fast Finish Triangles” to prepare your quilt for hanging. Full instructions for the “Fast Finish Triangles” can be found at http://www.alzquilts.org/sleeve.html
If the design used is from a pattern or any other source not your own, permission of the copyright holder in writing must be secured before your quilt can be registered with AAQI. Details about obtaining permission to use copyrighted material can be found at http://www.alzquilts.org/permission.html
Quilts must be free from any embellishments that can not withstand the "careful" care provided by the USPS.
Your quilt must have a label securely stitched to the lower right hand corner of the quilt. The label should contain the name of the quilt, your first and last name, city and state.
Finished quilts accompanied with a completed Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilt Project registration form may be handed in to Susan M. or Nancy C. anytime before August 29, 2010 . A printable registration form can be found at http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/yhst-40258611477147/Goddess.pdf
AAQI Ties That Bind quilts will be on display during the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild’s 2010 Exhibit. All Ties That Bind quilts will be donated to AAQI at the end of the exhibit.
By entering a quilt in the MLQG Ties That Bind Competition you are agreeing to donate your quilt to AAQI. Quilts will be sold by auction (Internet, live, or silent) or sold outright at the discretion of the Executive Director. All profits will be used to fund Alzheimer's research. Each donation quilt will have its own web page and the purchase price of the quilt will be listed on the AAQI website (http://www.alzquilts.org/index.html).
Thank you for supporting the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative!
Tie Tips
Please pre-wash your necktie (cold water, gentle cycle and line dry works the best). Ties provided by the MLQG have already been washed and ironed.
To prepare the material for use, the tie must be taken apart. Clip the two anchoring stitches on the top and bottom of the underside (horizontal tack stitches). Once the tacks are snipped, you can usually take the thread and just pull it out in one swoop, thereby freeing the lining (so much easier than seam ripping). Discard the lining and now you can iron the fabric* and cut as desired**.
*Keep in mind that your tie may be either silk or synthetic. Before ironing the dismantled tie test the temperature of your iron on a small corner of the material. The best way to prevent damage to the fabric is to use the silk setting on your iron as well as a pressing cloth.
**Remember that ties are usually made on the bias grain, cut the fabric on the straight of the grain to prevent your pieces from stretching or use a foundation.
2010 Challenge Quilt Theme & Requirements
Out of the Box
We are asking MLQG members to think "Out of the Box" for the 2010 Exhibit Challenge. All members are encouraged to participate, no matter what their experience in quilting may be. Make it a personal challenge and try something new!
For this challenge you are asked to make a quilt of any shape other than the traditional square or rectangle. (Circle, hexagon, triangle, trapezoid... Use your imagination!)
Quilts (three layers, quilted and bound) must be less than 36" at its widest/longest point. This includes embellishments that may be hanging off the edge of the quilt.
Quilts should have a hanging sleeve or another appropriate method for display.
Entries must have a label with the name of the maker and title of the quilt sewn securely to the back of the quilt.
The most important requirement of all...HAVE FUN! Step out of your quilting box and experiment a little.
